Ithaca Carshare, New York state’s first nonprofit carshare, shut down May 22, 2023 due to an inability to obtain auto insurance on its vehicles.
NY House bill A.5718 / S.5959 passed both the Assembly and the Senate in June and is now awaiting the Governor’s signature. This legislation amends the vehicle and traffic law and the insurance law, in relation to automobile liability insurance purchased from a Risk Retention Group for nonprofits in NYS.
This bill will not only help carshares across the state, but all 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations, who often struggle to secure auto insurance due to their unique risk.
If your nonprofit program relies on volunteer drivers — and/or serves the elderly, disabled, and children — you may have found it difficult in the past to secure auto insurance for your programmatic needs.
